Tell me and I forget. Teach me and I remember. Involve me and I learn. ~ Benjamin Franklin ~ |
I suppose my educational philosophy started to evolve when I first entered kindergarten. Kindergarten was my first school experience and my very first teacher made an incredible impression on me and inspired me to become a teacher. All through my elementary school years my imaginary play revolved around me being the teacher and my stuffed animals being my students. I would imitate the many teachers who had made an impact on me. So much of what my teachers taught me about learning has shaped my teaching philosophy.
I believe that ALL children can learn when given a nurturing environment, the supports they need to be successful, and a teacher who expects nothing less.
I believe learning can and should be fun and engaging. Children should not be passive learners, but rather active, engaged, and involved in their own learning. They should be encouraged to explore and discover new learning, seeking answers to their own wonderings. Children learn through play, encouragement, imitation, and experimenting. Children will learn in their own time, at their own pace, when they are developmentally ready to learn.
Teachers are facilitators of learning, not depositors of information.
Learning is a journey, not a race. Enjoy the journey!
